Arepas at Light

By Laine Derr

We met before the dew had fallen.

The showerheads do not work.
Our front door lock just fell off.
The freezer continues to flow along our kitchen floor.
Our dishwasher does not drain.

We met before the land was bare –

Yet we are happy, my love and I,
as the roof continues to creak, drops
of rain tap, tap, tapping though we won’t fade away
as the dough forms circles of the sun.

Laine Derr has published interviews with Carl Phillips, Ross Gay, Ted Kooser, and Robert Pinsky. Work has appeared or is forthcoming from EPOCH, Lana Turner, The Amistad, ROPES, Prairie Schooner, Chapter House, ZYZZYVA, and elsewhere.
