A Stars Hollow Spring

One of the things I love most about living in Farmington is that it reminds me very much of Stars Hollow (which is the town where the Gilmore Girls reside). I remember driving through Farmington for the first time and my mother said “It’s a Gilmore Girls town!” and in some ways it truly is. Growing up in the County, everything was a 30 minute or more drive away and oftentimes living there felt like living on an abandoned island because there was never anything to do. Farmington is small in the same way, but everything I need is in walking distance.

I’ve gone through each season here now and my second Spring is quickly approaching. I reminisce on the fall and how the great maple on the corner of Merril coats the entire lawn. When the days get shorter and I find myself yawning by 3pm as I sip my pumpkin chai to remain human. The first snow fall on campus and how everyone is running around like children with their tongues out catching the flakes. The fall wind is rough and the winter cold is no friend but every season here has a reward for you if you’re willing to search for it.

For now at least, I’ve shed my winter coat as this past weekend has rewarded us with the sun. I laughed when my friend said, “just give college kids the sun and they’ll come alive” as we roamed around town. The ideal weekend here is waking up with the sun and taking the time to get ready without being in a rush. Then grab your favorite people and head downtown to a breakfast spot. Reward yourself with a sweet treat and take up space in a corner booth. Then head to the bookstores and thrifts, and end with a stop at Reny’s. Return and shift through your findings from the day and call it one.

I’m grateful for this time in my life that I get to call this place my home. For the days when I can walk and buy a new book and try a new drink any day I want. I knew this was a place where I would always return. In every season I will yearn for the best used bookstore and the best Thai food I’ve ever had.
