The Rory Gilmore Reading List

One of the most known trademarks about Gilmore Girls is Rory Gilmore’s “excessive” reading. It is one of the biggest themes throughout the series and it is a big part of who Rory is as a character. Over the years, the “Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge” has taken off with fans of the show. This is a compiled list of books that Rory has read or mentioned over the seven seasons of the show. Going off of the list from Penguin Random House, there is a total of 339 books that Rory was seen reading. This has become so popular that there has been a book released with all of the titles of the books listed so fans can begin their challenge!

Growing up I spent many hours reading and it was always the answer to the question: what is your favorite hobby? I have many fond memories of sitting by my bedroom window throughout all my childhood homes and getting lost within some words. Today, when I’m asked what some of my favorite things to do are, I still answer with reading. While this is true, it feels almost like a lie because I can’t remember the last time I read a book that I hadn’t been assigned. Sure I read my fair share of articles, poems, and short stories but as far as novels go I haven’t seen one in a while. It’s not due to a lack of love for reading, I think maybe it’s due to lack of time or the inability to focus with so many other things going on. I’m not big into resolutions but if there is one thing I’d like to start this year it is getting back into reading for pleasure.

Rory’s reading list ranges from The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath to Swann’s Way. Her love of words plays a large part in the relationships Rory has through the show. It serves as a bond for her and her grandfather, as well as a common interest between her and one of her love interests Jess. While I compare my bookshelf to the books on Rory’s list, I find many similarities. From classics by Jane Austen, to Plath and to Shakespeare I’m wondering how many books I can check off her list. And now I’m wishing I had kept a list of every book I’ve ever read.

I’ve realized that a lot of the time I would spend reading has turned into time that I now spend writing. It feels sort of full circle in a way, I’ve read thousands of poems that have all changed me in a way. They have forced me to become a better poet and have taught me the words to be one. I’ve found nothing to be as satisfying as writing a good line, I wonder if that is the way I felt when I was younger about reading a good line, I like to think it is. I’d like to say my love of words has changed over the years, while reading is still something very important to me. I see that now it was the thing that shaped me. If I hadn’t spent so much time reading as a child, I may not have grown to be a writer. Perhaps this year I can find the balance of being a writer and a much better reader.

Until Thursday!
