Grave Goods for Luna

He’s in the yard

wearing shorts and a winter hat

head tilted back

watching the lightning, expressionlessly

He’s taken out a laundry basket

and an ancient tennis racket

with a yellow handle

It’s too cloudy to be swinging at stars

trying to knock them down

for the dog to play with

But they were her very favorite toy

so he’ll keep trying,

looking for a break in the clouds

long after everyone else

has given up

and gone to bed.
