Dogs

By Mitchell Krockmalinik Grabois

Shove a juicy bone

into the mouth of the barking dog

He has no right to disturb my peace

but why be mad about it?

He’s just being what he is

an attenuated descendent

of a snarling wolf

just as we are attenuated descendants

of snarling apes

who beat their chests

and whose savagery

eventually generated

HIV/AIDS

Why did I ever end up with a woman

who adores pets?

She went through a cat phase

then a ferret phase

(This rodent hid out under a pile of sawdust

in a terrarium

and when she screamed its name

it popped its head out

and she collapsed in gales of laughter)

That’s when I should have left her

but I’m lazy

and a masochist

and I know how lonely I get

when I’m alone

and I’m not the most attractive man in the world

and, for some reason, Viagra doesn’t work for me

so now it’s dogs
